Milk Punch anyone?wpid-milk-punch.jpg.jpegI don’t remember where I first read about milk punch, but the concept struck me as brilliant: A childhood favorite, all grown up. Were I from Louisiana, I would be more familiar with its history as it’s a classic New Orleans brunch drink. Typically made with brandy, simple syrup, vanilla, and a high-fat milk, milk punch would be my choice over a Bloody Mary any day.

Turning to a favorite cocktail cookbook, Vintage Spirits and Forgotten Cocktails, scored me the perfect recipe. (The book’s subtitle, From the Alamagoozlum to the Zombie 100 Rediscovered Recipes and the Stories Behind Them, is well worth noting.)

wpid-20150224_104743.jpgCalling for both brandy and rum, it promised a lovely flavor profile. Instead of simple syrup, I called upon honey’s affinity with milk and used this sweetener instead. And using all whole milk would have been too rich for my blood; I split the difference with half whole and half 2-percent.wpid-milk-punch-ingredients.jpg.jpegMilk punch has the vintage thing going for it, but it’s also just plain tasty. Think everything you like about milk–cool, refreshing, crisp, clean–with a hint of sweet, whiff of vanilla, and swift boozy kick. The shaved ice keeps it chilled and helps it go down even easier. In the interest of fun, the glass was rimmed with a bit of espresso sugar.wpid-milk-punch.jpg.jpegSo whether you have muffins at the ready or cookies that need milk for dunking, this adult beverage is worth checking out. Milk mustache, optional.

Milk Punch

adapted from Vintage Spirits and Forgotten Cocktails

  • 4 ounces (1/2 cup) whole milk (I used 1/4 cup each whole and 2%)
  • 1 ounce brandy
  • 1/2 ounce dark rum
  • 2 teaspoons simple syrup (I used honey)
  • 2 dashes vanilla extract
  • Shaved ice

In cocktail shaker, combine all ingredients; shake well. Strain over fresh shaved ice in cocktail glass. Serves 1.

    • do you have a favorite milk punch recipe, Suzanne? This was the first I’ve made. As much as I want to like Bloody Marys, I’d never list them as a favorite and I’d never make one for myself at home. Have enjoyed Bloody Mary bars at restaurants and parties before, but I think that’s more about the garnishes. Kind of like making (vodka) soup, lol.

      Just thinking now that it would be fun to have topping bars at a cocktail party 🙂 Nutmeg, cacao nibs, chocolate shavings, whipped cream, colored sugars. What else would you add?

      One more thing: I just ordered another year of Mary’s Secret Ingredients 😀

  1. Milk punch? The thought of alcohol and dairy had not occurred to me, save a milky Bailey’s beverage. Who woulda thunk it? I’d have to go full throttle with the whole milk. I like my dairy opaque, like I can stick a fork in it. Milk punch. I’m letting that settle. It’s like when I see Northerners on TV drinking “egg creams” and we all turn and look at each other with confused looks. Why drink an egg? I thought only Rocky did that. Well, my husband just brought home some apple fritters. I bet milk punch would go lovely with that–and oatmeal muffins, of course!

    • it surprised me at first, too, but apparently has a long history. Nothing new under the sun. It would absolutely be best with whole milk. I’m just scared of too many calories. (In which case I shouldn’t be drinking booze in the first place.)

      Why indeed drink an egg? Though I don’t know that egg creams contain egg. Or cream. Isn’t that a New York thing?

      Apple fritters? I love apple fritters! Save one for me, please? I’ll have one with my soy sausage when I come over for breakfast tomorrow 😉

  2. Ok, I have to say that the title of this drink had me scratching my head – but admittedly I am not a milk-drinker. But after reading it, I am about ready to go and whip one of these up just cause. It sounds delicious!!!

    • Right–milk punch? Sounds odd. It’s a good way to drink milk. Have also heard of “adult chocolate milk” with milk and Bailey’s or Kahlua. Very delish, yes. Anything to get that calcium in, haha.

  4. I have to admit, I did wonder just what cocktail was going to be offered with oatmeal muffins! But this sounds like miles and miles of yum! Of course, we’d have to do a detox after but that’s okay . . .

    • somehow milk seemed the thing with breakfast muffins. And then I remembered milk punch–love when everything comes together. lol, yes, miles and miles of yum. Fun phrase 🙂 Wouldn’t the oats in the muffins count as the detox? 😉

  5. OMG this looks so good. It kind of reminds me of eggnog. Love the vintage book too! LOVE these drinks. And the oatmeal muffins look great. I found myself thinking about Aunt Helen as I was working in Mexico. I’d love for someone to think I was cool the way you think aunt helen is kind of a hidden treasure.

  6. Liz, after reading your blog post, I just tried to order “Milk with Punch” as part of my hotel room service dinner. After a complex explanation, I’m sure it will make it on to the officially published beverage list for hotel guests, particularly if I request it again next time I stay at this hotel!
    Just love the way you are expanding your blog ideas….and you think that I have imagination!

  7. And this sounds fantastic. I love whole milk. I used to order root beer floats when I went to cabaret shows (I used to live in Reno). I have no idea the ingredients but it had milk (or maybe cream, but not ice cream) rum and galliano too. I loved it. Tasted just like a root beer float. 🙂

I had milk punch once in my life, at an ex-boyfriend’s house, when his mother made homemade (I am not making this up!) marshmallows and she made for her husband and my ex-boyfriend hot cocoa with Irish Cream brandy (Baileys’) and for the two of us, since I expressed interest in vanilla rather than chocolate drink, she made a great milk punch. I enjoyed it with brandy and rum in it. I ate the homemade marshmallows like candy and the ‘guys’ put theirs in their alcoholic hot cocoas. We had a delicious brunch with these beverages, Liz.
